The Pattern 1858 naval rifle was developed for the British Admiralty in the late 1850's with a heavier 5-grooved barrel. The heavier barrel was designed to withstand the leverage from the naval cutlass bayonet but may have contributed to accuracy. The 1858 Enfield Naval Pattern rifle was one of the most accurate weapons of its day.
